The MOTARC system is designed to reduce and minimise the damage caused by flashovers on DC motors and AC slipring motors reducing the damage to costly and long lead time components.

 

The system comprises of a state of the art relay and light sensitive detectors that are mounted inside the motor enclosure at strategic positions.

 

If an arc is detected the supply to the motor is immediately tripped thus isolating the induced voltage and current in the rotor / armature. The system operates considerably faster than conventional protection relays (9 mS) thus minimizing the arc short circuit and consequential damage to motor components

It must be emphasised that the MOTARC system will not stop flashovers from occurring. Correct brush and slipring maintenance will minimise the possibility of a flashover on the brushgear assembly, however certain events and circumstances can still cause flashovers to ocuur. Since the current and voltage in the rotor circuit is induced voltage conventional protection relays on the stator circuit only recognise and operate after a significant amount of damage has occurred resulting in significant damage that can result in considerable downtime and repair costs.

The system has the following benefits and functions –

 

  • Cost effective and easy installation requirements

  • A self testing function to detect and alert to a component failure or disconnection.

  • Can be configured for single or multiple motor operation.

  • Available in light only or light / current inertia operation. 

  • Sensors utilised are specifically designed photo-voltaic cells or optic fiber technology.

  • Has alarm and manual / remote reset functions for stand alone or DCS operation.

The standard MOTARC has the following inclusions -

  • The MOTARC comes as pre wired stainless steel enclosure comprising of a smart relay, keyed reset switch, keyed maintenance switch, power on lamp, arc detected lamp, relay failure lamp and lamp test button and reflective signage.

  • 3 arc detection sensors are included as standard

  • Adhesive reflective warning signage for the motor inspection covers

  • Assistance with site personnel / contractors for installation and commissioning

  • Operation manual and spare parts list

The MOTARC system is supplied by CoxCo P/L and can be installed and commissioned by its experienced technicians.

 

The system is typically installed during maintenance / planned outage or is installed as part of a motor up-grade.

 

The system can be installed as a separately enclosed system or integrated into the existing protection enclosures.

 

Site documentation and schematics can be upgraded to reflect the addition of the system to the motor circuit if required.

The MOTARC unit is self- testing, fail-safe, and configurable to your requirements with a proven in service history in the mining and industrial sectors.​ Numerous customer references are available upon request.
